Preventing Back Pain When Gardening

Gardening is a relaxing activity for many people during the spring, but if you do it often enough, you might start to develop back pain. If left untreated, the back pain can grow worse and really develop into a bigger issue. If you’re looking for a Suffolk County chiropractor to give you the best treatment, Suffolk County Chiropractic can provide you tips and treatment options to prevent back pain from gardening.

Stretches

Before gardening, you can try these different exercises and stretches that can help your back. If you want a proper warm up before hitting the flower beds and gardening, the following activities can help you:

  • Lay on your back, pull your knees to your chest, put your ankles together, and push your knees over to the side on the floor. Repeat on opposite side.
  • Similar to the exercise above, try to stretch your knees over to your shoulders.
  • Known as the “seventh-inning stretch,” try slowly doing three to six backbends, with as little discomfort as you can. If you feel any discomfort, do not continue.

Prevention

A Suffolk County chiropractor might also tell you the following advice for while you are gardening to prevent further back pain:

  • If you can, minimize lifting by yourself. Using wagons or allowing others to help you will ensure the reduced risk of back discomfort.
  • Bring a bottle of water outside with you and take frequent breaks.
  • If you have been sitting in one position for a long time, perform different stretches in between breaks.
  • If you are on your knees a lot, try kneelers or knee pads for maximum comfort.
  • Try long-handled tools to avoid bending forward.
